SPCS ES Readiness
At about 1330 on Wednesday 14 Nov a REDCAP alert went out. Members of the Shorty Powers Composite Squadron immediately reported to each other via the GroupMe application who was and wasn’t available. It was clear we had enough staff to man a UDF team so we reported as available to the IC, Lt Col Joe Long. Capt Dennis Svoboda, Maj Steve Rodgers and Maj Ed Danley were immediately activated and dispatched to Union IL for a 406 ELT beacon going on. When we arrived on scene, we met up with 1st Lt Andrew Loy from the Rockford squadron. The Lat/Long for the beacon was accurate as the location was a private heliport with a wind sock and single hangar, dead give aways that this was indeed the location, the DF equipment confirmed it. The problem was there was nobody home. Working with the IC and two McHenry County Sheriff’s squads and about 90 long minutes, the owner was eventually contacted and the beacon silenced in a Bell Jet Ranger III helicopter. The team returned home with another a non-distress find in the record book for the squadron.
